A word on quality: With DVDs the world uses MPEG2 encoding which does a pretty good job of compressing the large video signal into something more manageable. It does however lose some of our original picture quality - but we have to live with that. Sky and digital set-top boxes receive their many channels in MPEG2 format - so we are in good company. Streaming video over the internet is all about trade-offs. If we were all prepared to wait for an hour or so for a huge file to download onto our PCs then we could watch things in top quality - but we just aren't happy with that. People expect things to start happening as soon as they click over a 'view video' button - which is of course what happens but 'instant' internet video comes with a considerable loss of quality to the picture. Broadband has made things possible but we still need to deliver clips in relatively small in-screen boxes.
